What is the Career Boost program?

Under Career Boost, an eligible individual may access:

  • one subsidised training place in a Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma qualification; and

  • up to two subsidised skill sets in priority industries or sectors, where eligible.

An individual cannot do two general pathway qualifications under Career Boost. This is to ensure equitable access for all eligible Queenslanders to a training opportunity.

How Career Boost Can Help You?

Under the Career Boost program, the Queensland Government helps cover the cost of your training, making it more affordable to gain a nationally recognised qualification. While the subsidy reduces the total course fee, students are still required to pay a small co-contribution amount. The exact fee depends on the qualification selected, with greater subsidies often available for industries facing skill shortages or high demand.

If you hold a healthcare or pension concession card, or if you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you may be entitled to an increased subsidy, lowering your contribution even further.

Am I Eligible?

To access a subsidised training place under Career Boost, a student must meet the following criteria:

  • aged 15 years or older;
  • not be a school student;
  • permanently reside in Queensland;
  • be an Australian citizen, or Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), or a temporary resident who holds a valid visa and working rights on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen;
  • not already have a certificate IV or higher
    qualification (including tertiary qualification)
    completed within the last 10 years immediately preceding the individual’s enrolment (qualifications completed as a school student and foundation skills qualifications do not impact eligibility). Note: This eligibility requirement does
    not apply to individuals seeking to enrol in a skill set;
  • not be enrolled in another DTET-funded
    qualification, even if it is on hold or deferred, (foundation skills qualifications and self-funded/fee-for-service qualifications do not impact eligibility – Evidence will need to be supplied)

Note: When determining eligibility for a general training pathway, qualifications completed within the last 10 years include qualifications funded under previous iterations of the program (e.g. Higher Level Skills program).

Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry restrictions or exemptions may apply to certain subsidised qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.

Would I Qualify For Concession?

A concessional student fee is applicable for the following eligible students:

  • The student holds a Health Care , Veteran or Pensioner Concession Card issued under Commonwealth law, or is the partner or a dependant of a person who holds such a Card and is named on the card
  • Holds an official form issued under Commonwealth law, confirming that they, their partner or the person of whom they are a dependant is entitled to concessions under a Health Care, Veteran or Pensioner Concession card
  • The student is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • The student has a disability
  • The student is an adult prisoner
